ENlight LP-791 LCD Barebones Review August 10, 2006

This is one of the more unique barebones packages that I’ve seen in quite some time. Most barebones systems out there come as a box with a motherboard inside. You then pop in the processor(s), cards, and drives and hook it up to an external monitor. Not so with the ENlight LP-791 - it’s an all in one PC with no motherboard inside. Yep.. it’s basically an integrated LCD panel, a PSU, and space for a MicroATX motherboard. Ah yes there’s a 7 in 1 card reader inside and side USB ports… but really - the real noise is about being able to customize your own all in one system all you want!!! That’s pretty cool if you ask me. It’s not the prettiest looking combo system - personally I think the iMac wins there - but it provides a wealth of possibilities.

The real interesting thing about this barebones system is that it provides a wonderful platform for building small HTPC systems. Hook in a TV tuner or mount a motherboard with a built in tuner and you’ll have a fairly portable entertainment system for the bedroom or kitchen or den. Here’s the verdict from Hexus:

All in all, despite initial skepticism (ah, the jaded life of the tech. journo), once we got our hands dirty, ENlight’s LP791 proved itself to be a very nice, innovative chassis. It’s by no means for everyone, but if you’re in the market for a solution like this, we reckon the LP791 will do a damn good job, provided the price proves to be alright.
