ATI Theater 650 Pro Preview August 22, 2006

Powering the new ATI TV Wonder 650 TV tuner card is the Theater 650 processor which is previewed here at HotHardware.com. They got their hands on a reference card design using the processor (which is probably a varient of the TV Wonder 650). Now what was particularly interesting when I read the review was the MCE setup. HotHardware found that MCE only saw the analog tv tuner portion of the card. It would not recognize the digital tuner so there was no way you could get HDTV via MCE. To get digital television, they had to use the Catalyst Media Center software.. Does this also hold true for the TV Wonder 650? I’m not quite sure but I bet it would indeed hold true. If this is the case, then boy.. that blows. Anyhow, here’s the verdict from HotHardware on the ATI Theater 650 Pro Reference Card:

While the Theater 650 Pro may product better images, unless you have the two cards side-by-side, I think most will be hard pressed to declare one better than the other in the vast majority of real-world situations. Regardless, the ATI Theater 650 pro appears to be yet another quality product in ATI’s multimedia arsenal, and we look forward to testing retail-ready products when they become available.  Word is retail product could be out on the shelves in the next week or so, at an MSRP in the $129 price range.
