ExtremeTech’s DIY Dual Core Media Center PC September 20, 2006
Posted by flung in : Windows Media Center, DIY HTPC , trackbackAre you thinking about building your very own Windows Media Center PC? Well ExtremeTech has posted up a new article showing updated components that would go into a MCE system. It’s a great guide to some of the best equipment needed to make an HTPC happen. Unfortunately the article doesn’t actually show you how to put a system together but that’s not too difficult these days. One of the components that ExtremeTech decided to use that I’m not a particular fan of is the AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ processor. Yes it’s a dual core processor and yes it’s fairly inexpensive but you should also consider the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors which provide similar if not better performance at a lower price point and also generate less heat. Here’s the general component breakdown suggested by ExtremeTech:
- SilverStone LaScala LC17 case
- Antec NeoHE 430 Power Supply
- AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ processor
- ABIT AN8 Ultra motherboard
- Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu cooler
- Kingston ValueRAM Dual Channel Kit
- Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic Card
- ATI TV Wonder Elite and PowerColor T55E-P03 tuners
- Vbox Cat’s Eye DTA-150 and USB A-3560 HDTV tuners
- ASUS Extreme N6600 Silencer Graphics Card
- Seagate ML35 400GB HDD
- HP DVD Writer dvd740i and NEC 3520A
- Mitsumi FA-405M Media Reader
- Microsoft Remote Control and ZV1 Keyboard
