You may not realize this but ASUS actually makes some kick-arse notebooks - one of which is the multimedia powerhouse W2Jb as reviewed by the folks at PC Perspective. This sleek looking beauty features:
- Intel Core Duo T2500 processor running at 2GHz
- Windows XP Media Center
- Intel 945PM Express chipset
- 1GB of DDR2 RAM
- 17 inch WXGA+ widescreen display with resolution of 1440 x 900
- ATI Radoen X1600 256MB GPU
- 100GB SATA HDD
- 4 in 1 media reader
- slot loading 8x DVD-RW dual layer drive
- Intel HD Audio
- 10/100/1000 Ethernet
- 802.11 a/b/g
- Bluetooth 2.0 support
The system is packed full of multimedia goodness - including:
- Video and Audio in jacks
- Line-in jack
- Microphone in jack
- mini-RF connector
- VGA port
- TV out
- Micro DVI port
- Built in 5 stereo speakers
- Built in subwoofer
- Analog TV tuner
The specs look impressive and the looks are to die for. Anything wrong with it you might ask? Well after a brief look at the review, I noticed that the reviewer could not get the TV tuner to work under MCE which is a bit disconcerting. The tuner did work with ASUS’s Mobile Theater V4.0 software but come on - if you’re going to install MCE, you might as well support it right? What’s strange is - the tuner is an AverMedia TV tuner which one would expect to have good support for MCE. Maybe this was just a one time occurrence?
So PC Perspective’s verdict?
I think the Asus W2J is a spectacular laptop in both form and function — other manufacturers should look to this model as an example of how to design their products.
